Hmmm. Well, one thing is for sure. When I pick a topic to blog about I don't always get what I expect in the way of reader feedback. I am very glad so many of you like my teeth. I never thought I'd be getting teeth comments from yesterday's post. I'll have to thank my parents again for the orthodontist they hired when I was eleven. I don't think I've ever been called "elusive" before either. I'm extremely grateful you don't think I look like a marshmallow. I passed that observation on to The Torturer, and I won't bore you with his long-winded (yawn!) response. Lastly, no, I won't be posting any pictures of my cleavage anytime soon. Thank you for asking anyway.
My daughter, TR, starts college classes this Thursday. She's been living in her apartment in a town of nearly all college students for about two weeks now. Apparently every guy for miles around has realized there are seven very pretty girls all living in one spot. Their house has become the gathering place. TR tells me "the guys all show up around dinner time wondering what we are cooking." They arrive with gifts. Gifts like a six pack of beer or similar romantic gestures.
Men are so sentimental at that age.
One male neighbor arrived with "weed" as a house warming gift for the girls. They informed him they don't partake. He arrived the next night with a tray of shots. They refused. The next night he brought over beers. (He's a very persistent guy.) If he was hot I imagine they would have been a little quicker to accept at least a beer from him, but apparently "he's a creep" and so his gifts keep getting rejected. TR said the rejections aren't preventing him from appearing every evening. I gave her nice motherly advice which included, "Don't ever open the door to him if you are alone in the house."
Because I'm paranoid that way. And maybe overly protective.
TR thought it would be best to inform me of her recent encounter with the police by instant messenger rather than through a phone conversation. I'm sure it was just more convenient and not because she was afraid to tell me six cops had felt it was necessary to arrive at her house the night before.
There is a tradition at her school to "water balloon" the incoming freshmen. The freshmen moved into their dorms last weekend. All the parties are held in the adjacent neighborhood right off campus. Returning students have big parties, hide out on their balconies, etc. and blast the freshmen with water balloons as they walk the streets looking for parties. Harmless fun, right?
Apparently not.
TR's house has a big front yard which is unusual in her neighborhood. It has a fence going around the perimeter. A big front yard makes for big college parties with an excessive number of guests. A beer-pong table is prominently displayed in the front yard also.
Excessive guests equaled an excessive number of water balloons equaled an excessive number of drenched freshmen and a huge mess out on the street. Six cops showed up to break up the party. They were a little surprised to find seven cute co-eds at the center of the mayhem.
The cops made them drag all the water balloons out onto the street and pop them right in front of them. ("Did they have vodka in them?" I asked; she said, "No!") Then they made the girls and their many party guests clean up the mess on the street. They issued them a warning, did not even comment on the massive amounts of visible alcohol everywhere, and left.
TR said the party "resumed in about thirty seconds," but without water balloons. I asked her again, "What day do classes start?"
I'm wondering how soon she'll be busy with school and have less time for fun and debauchery.
TR is at my alma mater. I'm quite sure I never had any encounters with the police when I lived there. Ahem ... well, no encounters which were noteworthy really. Or maybe just none that I care to mention. (I never went to jail, alright?)
I did have two male friends who were convicted of a felony. It sounds terrible doesn't it? What type of delinquents did I hang out with?
Actually they were two very nice guys. Both of them were smart (?) and very good students. They decided one night after a few beers to have an adventure. There was an avocado orchard not too far away. They went to the orchard, hopped the fence and went crazy picking avocados. They filled up bag, after bag, after bag, of avocados. Don't ask me why. Both boys lived in a dorm and they had no access to a kitchen. They didn't pick the avocados to eat, they just felt like picking them.
Do you know what the price of an avocado is?
They came back showing off their wares and inviting us all to share in their bounty. No one wanted their avocados. We all lived in a dorm and had no kitchen tools and no way of making guacamole. The avocados sat in their car overnight.
It turns out the owner of the orchard had seen the boys leaving and recorded their license plate. The police showed up and the "evidence" was still in their car. Those avocados were worth a lot of money and their "prank" resulted in both boys pleading guilty to grand theft. My friends were convicted of a felony.
Did you ever have an encounter with the police when you were in high school or college? Did you have an almost-encounter with the police? Or maybe you should have had many encounters, but got lucky? Let's hear it!
haha your daughter sounds like she's having a fun time, jealous! No run ins with the police I don't think, such a sober college life... ahem. But not so illegal. The police aren't allowed in the colleges of the university I went to though, we had our own system of policing... which worked OK I guess, more of a blind eye...

Sounds like your daughter is having a good time at college so far. Yep had plenty of encounters with the police growing up since I was quite the wild child. You have brought back memories of running from the police on many occasions...running through corn fields and wooded areas....I was lucky in the sense that I didn't get caught but out in the country we were pretty much allowed to drink as long as we didn't cause trouble.
You have me thinking about avocado's now...love um...love making gaucamole...too bad that I can't have an avocado tree here in Minnesota because that would be like heaven to me!

Too funny!
No encounters myself...but only because I got lucky :)

I was a good girl all the time. *sigh*

I'm still trying to wrap my head around charging someone with grand theft for a couple of bags of avocados.
Trouble with the police as a teenager? No, not really, but I have an amusing anecdote I'll blog about later today, because it's far to long to put into a comment.

I never had trouble with the police personally but I did have to call them when I was in college for domestic abuse. My two roomates (a couple) were getting into violent fights.
It didn't pan out well, the girl decided I was the bad guy for calling them and it turned into a whole mess. Luckily I graduated shortly after and didn't have to deal with it anymore.
At my school, the cops broke up parties because people decided burning couches in the street was really funny. The cops didn't agree, go figure. (No I never took part in couch burnings)

Actually I made it through HS and college without any police encounters. Amazing:) Have to say though I never took fruit or veggies, or threw water balloons. BAHAHAHAHAHA
As far as the creepy guy-- I'd say if he keeps it up HE needs an encounter with said police!

Maybe I SHOULD have had more encounters than I did with the police. The most I had was having them break up a few parties just like TR. It was sort of the mark of a good party if the police eventually showed up.

My daughter is never going to college. Wait. Can I home school her? I'm sure she'd totally go for that...

Sadly I am quite square, and the only cops I interacted with in college were the ones escorting me to the hospital with alcohol-poisoned residents at 3 in the morning. Ah the life of an RA... (Especially an RA who always volunteered for Fri and Sat duty in the dorm, because as mentioned, I AM QUITE SQAURE.)

Well, there was this one time after
graduation. It was really pretty innocent. We decided to drive to the opposite end of the beach where some friends were staying and we drank a six pack, and a pint of vodka. We lost the keys playing quarter toss with some "mutual friends" that decided to kick us out
after we were so drunk we were crying. Thats when we were "sleeping" and the police woke us up and said to start moving or be arrested for public drunkenness. So needless to say, we started walking, straight to the beach where we slept some more until the
life guard told us we were sleeping in rental chairs. So then we bummed a ride back to our condo with some real friends.

Um...let's see. There was the time my (then) boyfriend & I were making out (fully clothed) in the back seat of his car and the police came by and open the door. We almost fell out onto the street!
And the time some friends (all boys btw) & I were just cruising around (really) in one of their vans listening to Alice Cooper "Schools out" really loud. The cops pulled us over for no reason (really!) and searched the van and us! I thought I was going to pee my pants even though we weren't doing anything wrong. I thought I'd throw up when after they let us go one of the guys pulled some kind of pills out of his jeans pocket and threw them out the window!
And just so you know, this all happened about 1976-7. I was in high school. SOooo glad that's over! :)

Wow, great stories! Ah college. Sounds like your daughter is adjusting nicely.
My friend and I broke into women's dorm that had been closed since 1967 over a Thanksgiving break (we were snowed in). We ALMOST got caught, but the officer didn't noice the open window. Or our tracks in the snow. Blind eye for us too, I guess. ;)

Oh! Oh! I have a GREAT story.
Okay, when I was a junior in college, I lived in a two bedroom apartment with two other roommates. I had the smaller bedroom by myself, and the other two roommates shared the other bedroom. It was a downstairs apartment.
One night, after bar hopping, I came home absolutely blind drunk. My friends dropped me off at my apartment and I staggered into bed, and passed out on top of the covers.
Sometime later, I was awakened by one of my roommates, who was shaking the bed and screeching that someone was trying to get into their bedroom! I woke up, still half-drunk, and staggered around, trying to figure out what was happening. My roommate was on the verge of hysteria. She said she heard someone banging on the window, and she looked outside, and some guy was outside looking in! It freaked her out, so she ran out into the living room. After she left the bedroom, she heard someone moving around, and she thought the guy had crawled into the bedroom. I asked her if the other roommate was home, and she said no, that she was spending the night at her boyfriend's.
Well, I was panicked because my roommate was panicking, I was half-drunk, and we could hear noises coming from her bedroom! We called the police, and they sent a squad car, lights and sirens. One officer banged on the door, while the other went around to the back of the apartment. I was never so glad to see a cop in my entire life. He came in and began asking us rapid fire questions about what had happened. In the middle of everything, the bedroom door opens and the cop nearly drew his gun, but guess who comes stumbling out of the bedroom wanting to know what the ruckus was about -- our third roommate!!! Apparently she had come home after the other roommate was asleep, and the first roommate didn't know it, so when she heard someone moving around in there, she thought it was the guy who had banged on the window!
Turned out that the guy who banged on the window had (obviously) banged on the wrong window, and was looking for our neighbors. When my first roommate screamed, it scared him really bad. LOL
The cops were REALLY mad that it was only our roommate and not some crazy guy, and gave us a stern lecture on crying wolf.
OMG we were so embarrased but now, from the perspective of time, it was freakin' hiliarious!!!

Hmmm... had a few experiences exactly like Linda's...plus a couple extra i'm not sure i should confess too...my parents ironically thought i would be safer living in a dorm...so wrong...
but, the real question here is, who wastes good vodka in a water balloon??!
Posted by: thistle | September 23, 2008 at 07:05 PM
OH! I am NOT going there!!!
suffice it to say i DID go to jail
Posted by: Joanne | September 24, 2008 at 08:12 AM
Water balloons and stolen avacoados??? What is this bullshit??? At my college, kids were doing shots and running naked through the green! They were trying a variety of different drugs! One of my friends got so freaked out after trying mushrooms they had to take her to the hospital where she was later booked for having illegal substances. Times sure have changed...and probably for the better! LOL
