A couple weeks ago there was a big fundraising night for my son's high school baseball program. Fundraising is critical to public high schools in California. There is no other funding for extracurricular activities anymore. At the fundraiser, there were lots of varied, donated, items we were encouraged to bid on. The proceeds, of course, went directly to the baseball program.
While Briefcase was busy drinking socializing, I bid on four seats to an Anaheim Ducks hockey game.
I won.
I was so excited, because I never win anything.
Of course, I had to pay to win, but still - I won.
The seats were center ice and just a few rows up. Fantastic seats! If I had bought them, they would have cost substantially more than what I bid on them. It turned out to be an amazing deal.
I'm such a winner!
Yay me!
The game was last Friday night.
I like going to sporting events and I hadn't been to a hockey game in a long time.
The Ducks were playing the Vancouver Canucks.
The Ducks lost 5-4 in a shootout.
It was a really exciting game.
This is what I can tell you about the game.
This guy is a VERY good player and a Big Important Duck:
He's also my neighbor.
Just kidding sorta, but he does live in Money Town.
(So do a bunch of other professional and/or retired professional athletes.)
That makes me practically famous (and a great athlete too).
This guy was very drunk and obnoxious:
Of course, Obnoxious Drunk was seated close by. He was "talked to" by the ushers and bouncers more than once, but he somehow avoided being thrown out. Too bad for the rest of us, don't you think?
Some nice people did come by with a mop and they not-so-happily cleaned up the beer he spilled everywhere.
There was a big fight between players on the ice. My husband and my son were very impressed. They laughed. They thought the fight was really funny.
Men are totally different than women, aren't they?
Anyway, after the fight was over this Duck ended up in the Penalty Box:
The other thing I noticed?
Those hockey players are really good ice skaters!
If I were in charge of hockey, however, I'd make a few changes to the sport.
For one thing, I'd get new, and prettier, red lights for all the rinks.
Also, I think I'd change the name of some of the teams. I kept watching the hockey game and thinking of the game "Duck, Duck, GOOSE!" I used to play as a child.
Except, "Duck, Duck, CANUCK!" rhymes even better.

What fun! Congrats on the bid win. I've only been to one hockey game, back in New Orleans. It was fun, even from the nosebleed section.
I like your humorous take on the experience. Just what the doctor ordered this morning!
Be well, 24.

I had sort of suspected that you were a great athlete all along. Sort of. Too bad about Obnoxious Drunk not being thrown out. If luck was on your side he would have been hit on the nose by a wayward hockey stick.

You won! You won!
The only thing I've ever won is a giant very unsoft and uncuddily rhino stuffed animal from my dentist office.

I dated a fairly famous hockey player once. . . and he was THE biggest attention whore I'd ever met. Mind you, he was a lot of fun to be around, but that was only as long as he was the center of attention.
Our first date (to a hockey game), he warned me that we may be stopped for autographs. I thought, "Please, WHO is this guy really?" (I honestly had no idea. He was just a dude I was set up with) He was just a guy. I had no idea of his "celebrity". And sure enough, people stopped us gushing over this guy asking them to REsign their shirts because his original signature had faded. I'm thinking, "Please. If they only KNEW you." He was an obnoxious ass who smelled bad and always used the bathroom with the door open holding full-fledged conversations. Eeeww.
We didn't date long. I was unimpressed. And he left a sour taste in my mouth for the whole sport of hockey.

I've been to one hockey game in my entire life, but it was a doozy - Beloved took me to one of the Dallas Stars' Stanley Cup games the year they won. It was a ton of fun, but probably would have been more fun if 1) I knew what the heck was going on and B) if the fans of the other (losing) team hadn't dumped beer all over us at the end of the game.

Sounds like you had fun. But now, thank to you, I have DUCK, DUCK, CANUCK STUCK in my head!

I, too, have DUCK, DUCK, CANUCK stuck in my head. I think I'll play that tonight with my kids. :-) Hockey games are fun.

When we lived in NJ we used to see the Devils play back in the day. I'd never liked hockey till I saw it live. Altho I like your interpretation too!

Duck, duck goose? LMAO.
All I have to do is see a picture of a hockey rink and I can smell it, feel the cold, hear the words bounce off the walls. Ohhhh memories. ha.

Here in Detroit, we call ourselves Hockeytown. Not only are all the Wings games sold out, but usually the Wings games OUT OF TOWN are sell-outs! Yes, Teamu Selanne is a very famous hockey player. So are Saku Koivu, Scott Niedermayer, and Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks used to be owned by Disney, when they were the Mighty Ducks, like in the movie. That's George Parros in the penalty box. He's been in about 50 games this year, and still has 136 minutes in penalties, making him rank #18 in the league for penalty minutes!

-->Our local minor league team is called the Norfolk Admirals but I always love when they play the team from Macon, Georgia. They're full name is Macon Whoopee.
Makes me laugh Every Time!

*smacks hand against forehead*
Girl, you wrote a whole post mocking my national sport. I ought to spank you.
Although, Duck, Duck, Canuck made me giggle.
Still. Next time, I'm taking you with me. And I'll teach you to cheer during the fights. (They are the very best part.)

There's a high school team local to me called the Zebras, could you root for a team called the Zebras?

I'm so jealous. The Canucks are our team! I'm so happy they beat the Ducks :)
