For about 24 hours after my surgery, I rested. Then I told myself, "You've been through worse," and I forced myself to get on with my life. Part of the reason I did so, was because Briefcase has been out of town for the last two weeks. When there's no one else to get things done, you find a way to do them one way or the other.
My energy has been lagging a little, but overall I've done great. (Um, except for the fact that I haven't done any cooking so my son and I have been eating horribly. It's hard to cook with one arm for the first few weeks after surgery.)
Yesterday, however, it was as if a ton of bricks landed in my path. My body just stopped.
I guess the six to seven hours of sleep I've been averaging each night was not enough post-surgery. Either that, or the elevated pain level just zapped my energy.
Pain does that. It has the ability to just suck the life out of you.
Anyway, I slept.
And slept.
And I missed my son's high school Back to School Night because I slept some more.
(I should feel more guilty about that than I do, but he's in high school, not elementary school, so I'm pretty sure I know the routine by now.)
The whole day made me feel pretty old and decrepit.
I realized I need to take much better care of myself for the next couple weeks so my body will be recovered and strong for the next, much bigger, surgery. Have I mentioned how much I'm dreading it? Ugh!
This weekend I'm going to rest, make sure to eat healthy, get some light exercise (I'm still really sore from the surgery so I won't be taking on anything too strenuous), and feed my soul by spending some time by the ocean.
What are your plans?

Get some rest. It does seem like you popped right up after your surgery. That photo is stunning where did you take it?

Yes, rest, eat way better than you have this week, (I don't have to tell you how much just eating better will help how you feel) and recharge by the sea. And teach that boy to cook for pitys sake! LOL!
BTW where was that photo taken? Just beautiful!

I'll be right over! I need that beach. My husband's memorial service is Sunday. That is going to be One Rough Day. After that, I think I am going to have to plan a get-away for a day or two. Maybe to your beach???

Sunshine works wonders for healing of the body as well as the soul.
I had planned to go up on the Blue Ridge Parkway today, but I hear rain on the roof... hmmm, change of plans perhaps.

Sleep! Rest! Sit on the beach! You need and deserve it.
I didn't go to "Parent's Night" at The Young One's school this year either, for the same reason, and I didn't even have the excuse of recovering from surgery.

-->We're having a big family party at my house this weekend. My husband has already injected and rubs some pork butts. Ha!
By the way, I think you'll get a kick out of the picture I posted on my blog today.

I hope you get some rest.

I really really hope you get some comfort soon. Many hugs to you.
On a side note, I am so glad I have you to live through to see pictures of my old home. I so miss that part of the beach. I used to go there in the middle of the night on a hard day and just stare out and think. Oh how I miss it. Thank you for the beautiful pictures!

It is important to take time for ourselves. Don't feel guilty about it as ultimately you will feel better and everyone else will benefit as well.

I really think as we mature (age-haha) we give ourselves guilt-free permission for the down time that we all need. Well that's what I tell myself!

Gorgeous picture. Laguna? It looks like the stretch of beach I walked for hours when my mom was in the hospital thsi year. Like you, the ocean calms me. I hope you get a chance to get some much needed rest this weekend.

I don't know how you do it. I'm such a big baby.
And you're right about the high school back to school night---not a big deal.
Now follow your own advice, young lady.
